More efficiency will make health care more affordable!

PBS has created a very important chart regarding our health expenditures, compared to other national health care systems: Link

If our politicians would have seen that, they would know that it is not the system that needs to change but that we need to make health care more efficient though totally different measures.

We have to figure out to save money on ambulatory, hospital, and nursing home care. But we are permanently walking around reducing profits and administrative costs. Yes, you would save money, but you would save much more money when you

Pharmacies:
  • Negotiate prices for drugs and medical appliances. In addition to that, citizens should be free to buy medical drugs from any country. The government could actively set up a system (similar to Amazon) that helps citizens to compare domestic and foreign drug prices and to buy foreign drugs safely.
Ambulance:
  • Reduce the ambulance to those cases where it is really needed. A doctor could take those emergency calls and evaluate whether the ambulance is needed or the patient can help him/herself. When the ambulance is needed, the doctor could figure out whether stationary care is needed or whether they can treat the person at home. Treatment at home would save a lot of money, too.
Hospital:
  • Invest in free preventive care so that people don't end up in the hospital in the first place. In addition to that there might be a lot of ways to save money in hospitals and nursing homes. Just take a look at the best ranking hospitals and nursing homes in U.S. News and apply that to all cities. The amount of hospitals would reduce and in exchange create one better, larger, comprehensive medical facility full of experts.
These are just a few proposals that would save so much more money than what is currently debated. We can hope or even be certain that there are such proposals in those 2,000 pages. But I think they will only encourage instead to dictate to act more efficiently.
